NCAD Open Day – National College of Art & Design, Thomas Street, Dublin 8 – Wednesday Nov 27th – 10am – 4pm – FREE
Visiting a school when you\’re not in school might seem like an odd thing to do. But this place is a little different. The National College of Art & Design is a strange and wonderful campus full of bright minds and mad works. The canteen does absolutely fantastic and cheap food and there is always something interesting to see. Meet staff and students, tour the campus, visit studios and workshops and view current students\’ work in progress. It is open to anyone who might be interested in studying at NCAD or just people who are nosey. It\’s free, it\’s worth a visit and you never know, you might find some academic inspiration.
Georgian Dublin, The Forces that Shaped the City (Part of The Jonathan Swift Festival) – Saturday Nov 23th, 3pm – FREE
Jonathan Swift was the most famous writer of his time. The author of Gulliver\’s Travels lived in Dublin when the city was booming and was at the peak of its Georgian splendour. This talk with Dr Diarmuid Ó Gráda exploring the untold stories of Georgian Dublin and how the city you live in today was built and planned. It is fascinating story of one of the most under rated cities in Europe. It takes place at the City Assembly House (Irish Georgian Society) which is just around the corner from the school. POLITICAL FOOTBALL (Part of The Festival of Politics) – Saturday 23rd, 3pm – Tailors’ Hall Tickets: Student €5.99
This looks absolutely fasciating. If you are into football but have never thought much about how political it can be then this is for you. The Anonymous founder of of ‘Pinceladas de Fútbol’ – ‘El Comandante’ – shares fascinating stories about politics and the beautiful game. Joining him will be David Goldblatt, sports writer, broadcaster, sociologist, journalist and author of The Age of Football. Our referee is journalist Barbara McCarthy. The panel will discuss everything from Pinochet to Palestine and examine how sport is used to prop up and take down governments and manipulate populations.
