At City Language School Dublin we like to let our students know what we think are the best things to see and do around Dublin in their free time. After a busy week of learning English we know it is important to wind down and relax. So here are three recommendations for this weekend and it\’s all in one place – Howth.
Visit of the Weekend – Transport Museum, Howth
Ok so a transport museum is probably not the main reason you are going to visit this really lovely part of Dublin but it is in fact worth popping into. You\’ll see old vans, double decker trams and carts from the days when horses transported coal all over the city. While the display itself isn\’t great, due to a lack of space, the items on display will give you a sense of what Dublin used to look like in days gone by.
Walk of the Weekend – Hill of Howth, Howth
This is the main reason for coming all the way out here. You need to go along the seafront and right to the end of the village before you get to the dirt track that marks the start of this walk. It takes a while before it gets spectacular but stick with it; the views are fantastic and the air is really good for you. For those of you who love walking, you can right around the head but it will take you the day so pack a lunch.
Pub of the Weekend – The Cock Tavern, 18 Church Street, Howth
In terms of eating and drinking, there are lots of places to choose from in Howth and there are many great seafood spots on the pier. Octopussy\’s is one that does great (if a little expensive) seafood tapas. There are also plenty of places that look out onto the sea but many of them look the same as any pub in the world. For that reason we are recommending The Cock Tavern. We are not saying it\’s the best pub in the world but it is where locals go to have a pint and a chat. There is a real open fire, some \’interesting\’ stained glass windows and the regulars are quite quirky. They even have a wall dedicated to \’Ships lost off Howth\’.
