Three on Thursday – U2, Collins & Yucky Alcohol

We are changing our Three on Thursday recommendations to reflect the fact that many events across the city have been cancelled. We hope to be back to normal soon but in the meantime there is plenty of culture to be had online.

This week\’s Three on Thursday takes you through some clips and snippets related to Dublin. We hope you enjoy them and maybe learn something from them. If you have any recommendations for videos, please let us know.

U2 – Bad Live in concert 1985

So not everyone is a fan of Bono but the guy\’s heart is in the right place and when you hear his voice on this version of Bad (one of U2\’s greatest songs) you know there is nothing wrong with his soul when he sings. Some of the notes he hits in this live performance are pretty extraordinary and when you mix it all up with The Edge\’s relentless riff and Larry Mullen\’s ever-intensifying drumming you have just over eight minutes of something pretty incredible. The same song was performed at the famous Live Aid concert in the same year. It has nearly 7 million views but trust me, this version is better.

U2 met at a school in Raheny when Larry Mullen posted an ad on a school noticeboard looking for musicians to start a band.

TRY – Irish People try Asian Alcohol

The idea is pretty simple. Some Irish people try stuff they have never tried before and record it. In this episode our guinea pigs try some Asian alcohol. Let\’s see what they think.

[Grammar Tip: Listen out for lots of Present Perfect Simple – \”I have never tried this before.\” etc.]

Michael Collins – Ireland\’s Greatest

This was part of a series from a few years ago when we had time to think about this kind of stuff. There six candidates in the series and at the end of it all we voted for Ireland\’s Greatest person. It was a bit silly to be honest but the result of the series was some good informative documentaries. This is one of them and sets out very well the life and legacy of this great Corkman. Worth a look.
