Three on a Thursday – The Dodder & Rathmines

At City Language School English Language School Dublin we like to let our students know what we think are the best things to see and do around the city in their free time. After a busy week on an English course in Dublin, we know it is important to wind down and relax. So here are our Three on a Thursday – three recommendations for this weekend. This week we are going to stay south and go for a walk along a river before heading for a few pints in Rathmines.

Walk of the Weekend – The Dodder

Some people love it and for others it\’s hit and miss. If you get it on a day that the council have cut back the hedges and tidied up a bit, it\’s a pleasant enough stroll. There are many places from where you can start but we reckon if you get the Luas to Milltown and start there you will get a decent stroll past the Dropping Well pub and on as far as Orwell Road you will be doing well. From there you can take the long way to Rathmines and ogle at some huge houses on Orwell Park before sitting down for a picnic at ur next place.

Visit of the Weekend – Palmerston Park

After a busy week on an English Course in Dublin you need to relax. This park is a great place to do just that.

It\’s not huge and the waterfall has been switched off for years but Palmerstown Park is still one of the nicest secluded parks to hang out in in all Dublin. It is very relaxed and a great place to come with a bunch of friends and have some lunch. From here it is easy to get to either Ranelagh or our next place in Rathmines.

Pub of the Weekend – Slattery\’s/Blackbird

After a busy week on an English Course in Dublin you need to relax

If you feel like chatting to older but fun and slightly crazy Irish people try Slattery\’s. It is one of the oldest pubs in the town and the most famous. The floorboards creek and some of them even slope but there is always a solid atmosphere in here. When he is in Dublin, Michael Stipe of R.E.M. likes to stop by. Irish film director Lenny Abrahamson (Room) likes to come in here too. Up the road from is the trendier Blackbird. On a sunny Friday evening, this place is unbeatable for atmosphere.
