At City Language School English Language School Dublin we like to let our students know what we think are the best things to see and do around the city in their free time. After a busy week of learning English in Dublin, we know it is important to wind down and relax. So here are our Three on a Thursday – three recommendations for this weekend. This week we are goign to stick close to town and have a look around Portobello.
Pub of the Weekend – The Bernard Shaw
The Bernard Shaw is a cool and trendy pub. In summer it’s nearly always packed to the rafters. This mainly down to its great selection of drinks, cool bar staff, great DJs and a very large beer garden. At weekends they try to do things a little differently and often host interesting concerts and cultural events. It has the added bonus of being right beside Eatyard which offers a good selection of food at decent prices.

Visit of the Weekend – Bernard Shaw birthplace
Anywhere else in the world and this would be a major tourist attraction but for some reason the birthplace of George Bernard Shaw never attracted the visitors it needed to stay open. Nonetheless, it is worth going to have a look and see where one of the world\’s greatest writers lived in his early years and where his great mind was formed and shaped. Shaw is one of only four Irish people to have won the Nobel Prize for Literature. The large mural across the road from his birthplace is a fine piece of work in and of itself.
Walk of the Weekend – The Canal
It will probably be more of a ramble than a walk at full tilt but it is a pleasant way to spend an hour before or after your few pints in the Bernard Shaw. Portobello is a lovely lived in neighbourhood and has a nice genteel manner about it. The canal is something of a reflection of that and when the swans are there it\’s even more quaint. Try to ignore the odd shopping trolley that might have thrown in by someone with a bout of overindulgence and enjoy strange tranquility on offer in the middle of a capital city.
