Shannon Smith has been teaching with us at City Language School in Dublin since early 2019 and is a very popular teacher amongst our students. When she is not busy teaching them the ins and outs of the English Language, she often recommends extra ideas for the students. As part of our Teacher Recommends series, we asked her what TV she is into at the moment and why.
\”Any of the students I have at the moment will know what series I would recommend because I am obsessed with it at the moment. It’s called The Queen’s Gambit and it’s one of the best series I’ve watched in a while. It’s about a young girl who lost both her parents and ends up in a home for children. Here, she learns to play chess and becomes one of the best chess players in the world. It’s really addictive and inspiring, as soon as I finished watching it I bought a chess board and learnt to play chess.\”

\”If you want to practise listening to Irish accents, I would recommend Derry Girls and Normal People. Derry Girls is set in Derry in Northern Ireland and is about teenage girls who are attending secondary school. It shows what life was like during the 70’s and really shows Irish humour. It’s hilarious and again you can try to understand the northern Irish accent! You can watch it on Netflix.\”

\”Most of Normal People is set in Dublin so it’s really cool to see places in Dublin that we all know. It is a kind of drama/romance series that follows 2 teenagers as they leave school and grow into adults. You can watch it for free on RTE Player. It’s based on a book which is also really good if you want something else to read.\”
