The Phoenix Park is one of the world\’s largest city parks and is great place to get out and about in Dublin. Located just 2km from City Language School’s city centre campus, we like to take the opportunity to bring students to the so-called lungs of Dublin and show them around. On this occassion, our top teacher, Pádraig O\’Beirne got in the saddle with some of our students and showed them around.

Largest City Centre Park in Europe
\”While we didn\’t meet President Higgins we did get to see his house in the Phoenix Park,\” says Padraig, \”And we really had a great time exploring this great place. When you live here, you sometimes take these places in Dublin for granted. So when I bring students on tours like this, it gives me a new appreciation of how great this little city is. I think the students were amazed at how such a huge park could be so close to the city centre and the school. There is so much to see here and it has a lot of history too so we were glad we brought our bikes.\”

Not only is the Phoenix Park, the home of Michael D. but it is also home to thousands of animals at nearby Dublin Zoo, whihc is one of the oldest zoos in the world. Nor far from here is the impressive Wellington monument, built to commemmorate the Dubliner\’s victory over Napolean at the Battle of Waterloo.

The Deer in the Phoenix Park
Of course one of the biggest attractions is the herd of wild deer that live and roam free in the park. Deer were introuduced to the park way back in the 17th century when they were used for hunting. Thankfully, that has now stopped and there are a herd of about 600 still living here.
