At City Language School we have a long tradition of using our social media channels to educate both our students and anyone who is interested in English.
\”Our motto Learn to Love English is there for a reason,\” says Social Media Officer, Johnny Butler. \”We love English ourselves. We love it for all its colour, accents, slang and variety. There are so many different versions of it and even so-called native English speakers are always learning new phrases and terms from different corners of the world.\”

Johnny has been looking after the school\’s social media for quite a few years now and says that while it is obviously a place to showcase the benefits of studying at our city centre campus, it has always been driven by a desire to help people learn the quirkier side of English online.
\”One thing that we have done consistently is give people little nuggets of English that they can learn and share as they go about their day-to-day routine,\” says Johnny. \”I have this romantic notion of people looking at our regular videos like the #TuesdayTipClip or our #WednesdayWisdom posts on the bus as they go to work and then using the phrase or phrasal verb in work that day. I always get a kick when I see lots of engagement around the vocabulary quizzes we post on Instagram and Facebook Stories too. We try to make them a little challenging if we can.\”

Johnny, who was an English Language Teacher himself for ten years, concedes that social media doesn\’t compare to the real deal of learning English in class and complimenting it with the real world but he definitely sees it as a positive space for learners. He says there are lots of others online from all over the world who are contributing and advises following a few accounts from different parts of the world to build up your knowledge of vocabulary and to help you get used to different accents.
\”I think what it really can do is add that bit of colour,\” he says. \”There are phrases and words that you simply never find in text books and this is where posts and short videos from local speakers can really help. Even if it sparks a conversation, then it\’s a win for everyone.\”
